History of the Northern Wayne Fire Company

The Northern Wayne Fire Company was established on May 10th, 1950. A public meeting to establish a local fire company was held at Preston High School in Lakewood, PA. At this meeting, the first officers of the Northern Wayne Fire Company were elected: Edward Brooking as president, Willard Holbert as vice president, Al Vouaux as secretary, and Cornelius Dibble as treasurer. The very first engine purchased by this newly established company was a 1935 fire engine bought for $1,200.00. It was purchased from Honesdale Hose Co. No.1.

Nelson Doyle offered a garage at the four corners on Route 370, Lakewood for temporary housing of equipment. Father Merkel was elected the very first fire chief of the newly established company. After much debate, it was determined that the first firehouse would sit on a triangular plot fronting the paved highway, Route 370. Cornelius Dibble proposed getting a loan of $1,500.00.

In 1953 a new fire truck was purchased at a cost of $20,000.00. This was added to the 1935 truck and a four wheel drive Jeep used for brush fires. On March 21st, 1957, a meeting was called to organize a ladies' auxiliary. After a great deal of discussion, Linda Gilchrist made a promise to form an auxiliary.

October 1959, the Northern Wayne Fire Company purchased their first ambulance. Harold Furie loaned $1,900.00 to the fire company for a second ambulance and in 1963 it was traded for a Ford van. Another ambulance was purchased for $6,975.00 in 1968.

In 1990 a new Sutphen fire truck was purchased This Truck currently is our Number 1 Engine.
